How to optimize your Google Business Profile: the complete checklist

To optimize your Google Business Profile, verify it, choose the most specific primary category, fill in every service, write a full description, add real photos every month, post weekly, keep hours accurate, match your name, address and phone to your website, enable messaging if you can answer fast, and build a system to get and reply to reviews.

At risk

You are probably losing customers every week. Start with these fixes.

Fix these first

  1. Verify your profile—unverified listings barely show on Maps.
  2. Pick the most specific primary category; it is the biggest relevance signal.
  3. Start asking every customer for a review the same day.

1. Ownership and verification

Make sure the profile is owned by a Google account the business controls, add team members as managers (not owners), and confirm it’s verified. An unverified profile barely shows on Maps.

2. Business name

Your real-world name, exactly. Adding keywords or cities is against Google’s guidelines and a common suspension cause.

3. Categories

The primary category is the biggest relevance signal. Choose the most specific option for your main service, then add secondary categories only for services you really offer.

4. Address and service areas

Storefronts show their address. Service-area businesses hide it and list up to 20 service areas. Never use a mailbox or virtual office.

5. Hours and special hours

Set regular hours, holiday hours and any special hours. Wrong hours lead to frustrated customers and bad reviews.

7. Services and products

List every service with a short description. Restaurants and retailers can add menus and products.

8. Description

750 characters, written for people: what you do, for whom, where, and what makes you different.

9. Photos and videos

Storefront (so people recognize you), interior, team, work and products. Add new ones every month. Avoid stock photos.

10. Attributes

Languages spoken, accessibility, payment options, women-owned or veteran-owned where it applies. If you speak Spanish, say so.

11. Google posts

Publish weekly. Answer one customer question per post, show recent work, or share an offer. Avoid empty “call us” posts.

12. Questions and answers

Add the questions customers ask most—and answer them yourself.

13. Reviews and replies

Ask every customer, reply to every review. Full system: how to get more Google reviews.

14. Consistency across the web

Your name, address and phone must match on your website, Bing, Apple Maps, Yelp, Facebook and key directories.

15. Tracking

Use the performance report inside your profile to watch calls, direction requests and website clicks. Add UTM tags to your website link so you can see profile traffic in your analytics.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I update my Google Business Profile?

Weekly posts and monthly photos are a good rhythm. Update hours and services whenever they change.

Does optimization guarantee I’ll rank #1?

No. It makes your profile as relevant and prominent as possible. Distance and competition still matter.

Should I optimize my profile in Spanish?

If you serve Spanish-speaking customers, yes—add the language attribute, reply in Spanish and consider bilingual posts. See our Spanish guide to the Perfil de Negocio de Google.
