How to get your business on Google Maps (step by step)
To get your business on Google Maps, create (or claim) a free Google Business Profile at business.google.com, enter your real business name, category, address or service area, phone and hours, then verify it with the method Google offers you. Once it’s verified and complete, it can appear in Maps and in local search.

When someone in Dallas searches “electrician near me,” Google shows a map with three businesses before any website. If your business isn’t on that map, the call goes to someone else. The good news: getting on Google Maps is free, and you can do it today.
This guide walks you from zero to a complete profile, then shows how to start showing up more often. Free tools are built in as you read.
What you need before you start
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Your real business name | It must match your signage, invoices and website |
| A Google account you control | Whoever creates the profile becomes the owner. Don’t let an employee use a personal email |
| Address or service area | Storefronts show an address; service-area businesses hide it and list cities |
| A phone number you answer | It’s the number customers will tap to call |
| Accurate hours | Wrong hours create angry customers and bad reviews |
| 5–10 real photos | Storefront, team, work, products |
Step by step: get your business on Google Maps
- Search for your business first. Open Google Maps and search your name. If a listing already exists (Google sometimes creates them from public data), claim it instead of creating a duplicate.
- Go to business.google.com and sign in with the account you control.
- Add your business name exactly as it appears in the real world—no extra keywords like “Best Plumber Dallas.”
- Choose your primary category. Pick the most specific one for what you do most (“Roofing contractor,” not “Contractor”).
- Add a location or service area. If customers visit you, add your address. If you travel to customers, choose the cities you serve and hide your home address.
- Add your phone and website. No website yet? You can still create the profile and add one later.
- Verify. Google shows the methods available for your business—video, phone, text, email or mail. You can’t pick one Google doesn’t offer.
- Complete everything. Hours, services, description, attributes and photos. A verified but empty profile convinces nobody.
Storefront or service-area business?
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Customers come to you | Show the full address and your hours |
| You go to customers (plumber, cleaner, mobile detailing) | Add service areas and hide your address |
| Both | Show the address and add service areas |
| Online only, no in-person contact | You may not qualify for a profile—focus on your website |
Google doesn’t allow mailboxes, virtual offices or addresses where nobody works. Using one is a fast way to get suspended. We explain the right way to cover several cities in how to show up on Google Maps in Garland, Mesquite, Forney and Rockwall.

Why your business might not show up yet
Even after verification, a new profile may not appear for every search right away. Common reasons: the searcher is far from you, the category is too broad, competitors have more reviews, or the profile is brand new. Run the quick diagnostic:

Frequently asked questions
Is it free to put my business on Google Maps?
Yes. A Google Business Profile is free. Be wary of anyone charging just to “list” you without explaining the work.
How long does verification take?
It depends on the method Google offers. Video and phone can be quick; mail can take longer. Use only the methods Google shows you.
Can I list my business if I work from home?
Yes. If you serve customers at their location, add service areas and hide your home address.
Can I have a listing in every city I serve?
Only where you have a real, staffed location. For everywhere else, use service areas on one profile.
Want us to do it for you?
You can do everything here yourself. If you’d rather have it done right the first time, see Google Business Profile optimization or monthly management, or scan your business free.
